Besides just the children, farmers hogs were very well fed with the trash can sized buckets of food that was left over from each school. That is against the rules today, as is the leftovers from restaurants. Too, behind every grocery store throws away a LOT of food that is past its date. Some food banks arrange to get a little bread, but most is thrown away. Most never makes it to be used for compost, much less to feed farm animals.
