What is the future for the plants growing in soda bottles? Surely they won't be staying in their small home? Just curious!

Actually, the 2-liter soda bottles were something that I end up going through a lot of (I know - Soda is bad for me, but it's what I drink), and I decided to see if I could find a way to implement them into my gardening.

So, they basically serve as a temporary holding place, when the seedlings in the small plastic plants outgrow that space. Mostly, the ones that have ended up on the 2-liter bottles, I have ended up just giving away. I just kept on planting a few tomato seeds, here and there, and the ground, here, is too hard for me to dig it by hand (I have no tiller. ACK!!). Plus, for some reason, people seem to enjoy receiving free tomato plants.

Also, they are part of my overall experimentation. I planted some of the tomatoes still in the 2-liter bottles, with the bottoms cut out, over at one of my sisters' houses. I use an old wire type refrigerator basket from our previous refrigerator to carry the upside down 2-liter bottles, as the lids of them will go down inside the small squares of the basket, allowing me to transport six of them at a time without incurring a big mess in my car.

I had intended to try and plant some tomato plants this way, and just unscrew the cap on the bottles, to allow the roots to grow down into the ground, that way, but I actually haven't gotten around to experimenting with that approach, yet. I figure that the roots will simply clog the opening, and the plant will likely die.

Thanks, it sounds like you enjoy "playing in the dirt" ! As most of us do. I love experimenting.

There seems to be a similarity between our gardens, we both seem to like containing our veg beds with building materials

Your garden looks great, I wish my cuke plants looked that healthy

I was thinking you were doing a rain water grow system thing with the white 4" pipe but then I noticed you've planted into it (?)
