uh oh...how to tell pole beans apart
I planted Mayflower next to Jeminez this year, and from image searches, it appears that they look alike. Do they? Has anyone grown these two at the same time, and do you have tips for telling them apart? I wanted to try them as green beans first, and the first pods are at the boundary between the varieties.

Here's a photo of what I have so far. (I don't know why it got rotated 90 degrees. My beans are growing the normal way!)

If I understand you question correctly you know where you planted each variety but the beans that are now ripe are where the plants are intermingled. If that is the case you may just have to follow the vines back. If you don't know where you planted which then the picture I see online show the mayflower as a cutshort bean and the Jimenez as an oval bean. When they go to the dry bean stage you should be able to tell.

Mayflower gets to about 6 feet, for me, with 4"-5"? round? pods. Since it's a dry bean, I can't recall the color of the pod in the green stage. I try all beans as snaps, even those that are dry types. I don't recall the taste of Mayflower.
Pods, I think, are brown when dry. A really horribly producing waste of garden space, in a variety that I'm trying to forget about, therefore my lack of details. Jeminez grows from 12-20 feet in my garden. Pods are 7"-12" long, wide, flat, green with redish streaks. Trusses usually have about seven flowers. Best ID might be the flower, which is white with a touch of pink blush on just a small portion of it. My favorite bean. Gary Last edited by Tormato; July 30, 2013 at 02:40 PM. |
