Default (Yellow) Green Giant

I have been watching my Green Giant plant like a hawk so as to ensure I do not miss out on picking a ripe fruit; others have posted about gauging GG elusive ripeness. The first fruit started to take on a yellow blush so I thought that it was starting to ripen up. However, the yellow blush turned into a complete pale yellow fruit, sort of like a white tomato. It does have a faint pink blush on the blossom end- sorry about the poor quality of the pic. 8 1/8ozs. (231 g). The plant is PL.
Do I have the real deal or not?
Jeff

No, you don't! Was it regular or potato leaf? I asked Reinhard about the origin of Green Giant - apparently it is a potato leaf green selection from a cross some time back - when I grew his sample of Green Giant, I got a few regular leaf seedlings, which produced yellow fruit. If what you have is potato leaf, then you have the 4th of the 4 possibilities perhaps (yellow fruit potato leaf). I found the yellow regular leaf tomato to be quite good. But authentic Green Giant should be a cool, minty true green inside when fully ripe.

Good question - how was the flavor? I would love some seed (hint hint...). Typically, when you have a recessive trait like PL, it should show up pretty well 100%. Fruit color could be another matter, however. I bet you would have no shortage of people who would like to help you find out, esp. if it tastes good! So, will this be Jeff's Yellow Wonder

I will taste it in a day or two...right now it is just starting to give under finger pressure.

PS I certainly would not want to cause any confusion with Tom's....(LOL)

A brief update on the Yellow Green Giant....
The flavour is very good, okay in all honesty the best tasting tomato I have had this year. Very juicy, sublime sweetness to it- the type of sweetness that permeates your mouth but does overpower the refreshing flavour of it.
It funny as I have been looking for a pure yellow (large- beefsteak or oblate) tomato- one that is yellow when fully ripe and does not change to a golden colour. I hope I have found it.
As for a working name...and one not to create confusion with Tom's Yellow Wonder nor with Yellow Giant or Brown's Yellow Giant....Casey's Pure Yellow

Does anyone else have any suggestions?
Jeff

PS Any of you from downunder who would like to try this tomato out to see if it grows true or not, please PM?

Ja!

What was your seed source? That is, what is the chance that you're growing something already known before you give it a new name?

As I recall Reinhard got what's known as Green Giant from Canada, but I never knew what variety he got, only that when he grew out whatever it was that he got from Canada that he got what's called Green Giant with one plant.

Yes - Reinhard selected a single PL plant amongst the RL, which became Green Giant. the RL were also large green tomatoes (he doesn't recall the name). If a yellow pops out, it is new, but is it stable? The other consideration is that you need to grow it out a few generations to see how variable it is. And I am sure you will get lots of help for that part!

I looked briefly through my seeds packs and of course could not find where it had come from. :lol
I will track down the seed pack and contact the source, ASAP. I do know that I did get from someone in the States.
Carolyn, Do you have any other suggestions as to a clear yellow PL 8+ oz range so as to narrow down the possibilities?
Thanks,
Jeff
EDIT: No need to go through my seed packets as I found a PM in my mailbox with the trade details. I sent a message to the person (California) and hopefully she will get back to me with some more information about her GG.

The only clear yellow PL that I know of is Lillian's Yellow Heirloom. Lucky Cross and Little Lucky are both larger (LX), and smaller (LL), and have a red blush.

Thanks Craig.
I should also add that the blossom end has sort of a sun halo to it with a very fine sliver of pink extending 3/4 of the way into the tomato.

D, I hadn't realized that Green Giant had thrown an RL large yellow, so thanks for mentioning that.

If it did, then I see no reason why it couldn't throw a similar yellow that's PL.

And does this indicate that it's still segregating?

What did Bruce have to say about his yellow GG PL? I must have missed that somewhere.
