Baja

Absolutely correct on the over fertilization of tomatoes and peppers. I have also tried leaving the Osmocote out of the mix and adding 1/2 strength Foliage-Pro 9-3-6 or General Hydroponics MaxiBloom 5-15-14 (once production starts) with success. I added about 1/2 pint to the refill of the water chamber twice a week. I have found that both of these products provide good plant nutrition and additional micronutrients.

Forgot about the Epsom Salt, 1 tablespoon per gallon of water, add 1/2 pint every 2 weeks when I fill the water chamber. No problem with blossom end rot for the last two seasons.

My 2 best producing tomatoes in buckets last season were Roma and Marmande. Both produced 25-30 fruits, not large but very tasty and the Marmande grew to 5' tall and would do well in your climate. Pruned both back to 3 stems and pinched additional suckers to control the plants.

Great stuff, Muddy. Good to see a light touch on the feeding and some insight on pruning. It's going into my notes.

And you really do have a good design. Here's the first one I built back in 2008. I put in the overfill hole thru the side of the bucket just at a level even with the top of those "fins". Added a cutout from a top (lid) to make the main bed support and ran a piece of PVC down the inside for refilling. I still have and use it more than 9 years later.

What is the purpose of the "X" supports? Will not the PVC pipes hold up the bottom? Thanks (know this is an older post but maybe I'll get lucky and get an answer )
