most large nursery companies start their plants earlier than they should because they also do not know how the weather is goin to pan out. Then they spray their plants with a retardant to slow the growth down--in return that slows down the production but only for a short while. Plus you never know what else they sprayed on the plants and I have bought plants in the past that were not what was on the label.

Now I only grow from seed. No more store bought plants.
There is nothing like the feeling of seeing those first sprouts peek through. I'm with my plants from start to finish!

I start from seed because I cannot find the varities I want. Also, no way to buy plants as early as I like to start.

I start from seeds, too. All fall and winter I'm always thinking, " can I start my seeds yet?" I like being able to see all stages of tomatoes, from tiny seeds to huge tomatoes. Plus, where else am I going to get heirloom tomatoes with beautiful names ( or weird, funny ones, too) that not only sound amazing, but tell stories, too? Transplants from my local garden center? I think not. I also think that tiny tomato seedlings with one set of true leaves are the cutest thing I ever saw. And, if you grow from seed, it really is home grown tomatoes that end up on your plate. But there are benefits of buying transplants, and I'm not against that. But I always start my own tomatoes.

P.s. Don't you love looking through seed catalogs?!

I have to start from seed to get the varieties of what I want. Also with putting out almost a thousand transplants between the tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and others, buying plants would bankrupt me every year.

Reading about the different varieties and trying to get them is part of the fun of it. It is interesting. I can hardly wait for the new ones to ripen to see what I've got. I could never eat all I grow, I give them to people. I used to be this way with flowers but someone hooked me with their descriptions of heirloom tomatoes.

Most all are started from seed! Except the few plants my friend graciously gives me!! She starts over 1,000 from seed...Mostly Hybrids, until I turned her on to Heirlooms!

In the past I would purchase plants. Last year I went all out and got heat mats, lights, and my own seeds. I now believe that it is the only way to go.

We purchased rebar to build big strong cages to grow heirlooms and pvc for above ground watering.
