Interesting. I couldn't find your particular document but I found this one which is all the tomatos in 2014 they tested I think - and Sungold is no longer the leading cherry but Lemon Drop is..

I checked RedFireFarm.com your source to read the original 2013 pdf and couldn't find it and found 2014 instead so here are the cherry tomatoes. I had wanted to see the rating criteria and who was doing the voting.

"general public" whoever showed up
each person had 5 voting stickers
stickers stuck on cards under each tomato
5 could go on one tomato, or one on five tomatoes, etc.

each variety name was known (marketing names influence people)
participants could see all the votes before voting (bandwagon effect).
each judge sampled only a fraction of the 147 varieties (cherry tomatoes are more hygienic to try in public and skewed, voting reflects whatever was conveniently sampled, etc.)

It doesn't sound like much of a test - does it?

I grew Lemon Drop last year and gave it two thumbs down. Not only was it tart, but it split if I so much as looked at it. I grew 9 or 10 cherry varieties last year, and this was the worst for splitting!

At least my dog, Abbey, enjoyed them and actually preferred Lemon Drop to Brandywine Cherry!

Lab....what are your favorites??? I look at some of these "non-scientific" tests as being "guidelines". If you continually see a variety ranked highly...there may be some truth there.

lab, I grow lemon drop every year. I like it, but it is a splitter, that drives me crazy. I like that it is tangy, but it isn't sour.

Honeydrop might be worth trying, somewhere I remember it was very sweet. The number two on the 2014 list. Maybe it has something to do with Honeydrop being named and selected on a farm 25 miles from the event/host farm and picked up by Fedco. Only one way to find out if it is:

I did not like the Coyote Cherry and they got A 34. I guess Ms Carolynn said a long time ago to us here :that tomatoes taste different to different people. I could not ever sale them that year I grew them. If I can make enough protective covers this winter I will place them back on my list for their Seeds.

I do think we need to keep in mind that even though a tomato gets high ratings from a random group of people, that doesn't mean the plant is hearty, productive, or otherwise grower-friendly. For example, I am a hydroponic grower in Texas so I have a set of requirements that may make Lemon Drop a total no-go. That said, it is still interesting to see what people liked.

I like the sticker methodology. When I bring tomoatoes into work this summer, I think I will do the sticker thing.
