I wonder if the red perrilla (shiso) would make a good substitute for the red hot candies in bread and butter pickles?

Might have to try that and see.

That may be something you have to experiment with.

The red shiso I've grown, didn't grow well because of neglect and had a slight menthol peppery flavor.


The red shiso my aunt grows is sweet, slightly peppery, and has a slight menthol flavor that is very good. The shiso my aunt grows has a more mild flavor compared to mine and is more sweet.

The one my aunt grew and the one I grew were both really good. But can be separated for different uses because of the growing conditions. We both grew the exact same type. The red leaf version from my aunt, it's really pretty and ornamental. But is also invasive like mint.
