Onion seed sowing!

Last year I started onions ~Jan 25 and they were a little small when I planted them out in mid April, so we'll be sowing onion and leek seeds this weekend! After this week's bitter cold and wind it will be an enjoyable time and a hint of spring. Hot peppers will soon follow too!

I'm with ya. I direct seeded some leftovers from last year in a cold frame to see what might happen. They have just sprouted. I just sowed some new seed indoors a day or two ago. Last year I transplanted them to ground mid-March to early April. Intermediate day seems best for me.

I planted some onion and garlic bulbs in November and they are doing well despite the cold. The pepper seeds I started in december have come up for the most part and are progressing. I am using the clear plastic containers you can buy for a dollar for a mini green house and maintaining them in a cool room.

I planted my shallots and potato onions around Halloween and they look good. I'll sow my Bermuda onions this coming week. I put mine out in March. It'll nice to get started on the 2015 season! I'm ready!

Here in this area of Texas, onion sets will be in stores in a week or two. I've been thinking of that for months now. We are going to plant around 135 feet of onions this year in rows. The most we have planted in years past was 90 feet.

I don't count the companion plant onions we plant with the tomato plants. We buy those in bulb form because they keep for so long before having to plant them. You can plant them a few weeks to a month before setting out tomatoes here. They don't get really large, but they help keep bugs away. It is also nice having smaller onions around for meals for two.

Ray I see you are also in NY. Did you start your onions and leeks in the ground or indoors? What about scallions like bunching green onions ? Are they supppose to be planted now too? Its hard for be to believe after this past week's snowfall of planting anything outside but I gotta just get over that!

I only grow onion from seed, so I start indoors in January under lights. Onions grow slowly from seed so by the time April comes around and the soil can be worked, they will be transplanted in the ground after some hardening off. You can do the same with scallions so you can get an earlier crop.

I bought seeds for Tokyo Long White Bunching onion. Had no idea they were slow growing. I guess I'll start some tomorrow.

Depends on your indoor seed starting temperature and your plant out date. I usually aim to plant my onion plants out in early/mid April. I grow my seedlings in my basement where it is cool (~60F). Last year my onion seedlings were a little smaller than I had wanted, so I moved up from Jan. 25 to Jan. 10 this year. I would think a good rule of thumb is 10 weeks before your plant out date. If you are growing seedlings cool like mine, you may want to add a couple weeks.

Without knowing your climate, I would guess your plant out date for onions is similar to mine, if not a little earlier, so it might be about that time.

Nothing to worry about, just get started. You still have plenty of time before plant out.
