I was expecting a more complex flavor on the Indian Stripe PL, I haven't found it yet. Though it is a favorite of my wife as she likes the tartness. The plant is also healthy and productive so it will most likely come back.

Paul Robeson, ISPL and JF

The first Paul Robesons were not mealy, the taste was less tart/sour than the ISPL but I have not found any hint of complex flavor. I am hoping the next wave of fruit will be different.

The first Cosmonaut Volkovs - fused fruit - mealy(grainy) and disappointing in taste.

Will the next ones get better?

Banadoura:

Great thread and pics! Congrats on the first tomatoes.

Many of my "first fruits" hold such great promise in their looks but disappoint in taste. But, the taste and texture will change over time. It also seems like some of the most intense flavors are produced by the driest conditions.

Your plants and pictures are beautiful. I hope you have a long, warm Fall!

Default The best so far: Cherokee Lime

Like I mentioned above, Cherokee Lime is an outstanding tomato, the surprise that makes it all worth it.

@Marsha thank you again for the seeds!

Cherokee Lime & LLK

Beautiful texture and fruity lemony taste

I picked the fruit when I noticed the skin yellowing, will be using this as an indicator of ripeness. I will save some seed from this plant if subsequent fruit keep the same taste.

@jt thanks, and best wishes to you too for a long warm fall. I didn't get enough of my tomatoes yet, so fingers crossed for 1 more month of picking

I totally agree with your assessment, I guess the black varieties fell victim to the wet/cold summer.

In the next couple of days I will be tasting Black Cherry and GGWT.

My first MSE was lost to BER, it was a bunch of fused fruits.
Stupice is late because of me transplanting not the variety.
Rebel Yell has a couple of fruits but none blushing yet.

To be continued...

Congrats! The long wait is over. As Jeff has said, the tomatoes will most likely improve as the season moves on. The first tomatoes are usually somewhat bland and disappointing. If you cut back on the watering as the fruits mature, the flavors will intensify more. This will also help to prevent the mealiness that you complained about. This is one of the drawbacks of container gardening but once you figure it out, it is not much of a problem.

@MissS I wish I had a say in the watering, it's been mother nature for weeks now. Last time they were watered manually was sometime in July

Default Black Cherry

Black Cherry did not disappoint, the sweet flavor was a hit so it will most likely be coming back next year.

Look at these nice colors!

Default Another round of pickings

More tomatoes gathered in the past 2 days!

GGWT is a hit and will be coming back next year.

8 varieties in this image:

Lots of LLK, beautiful trusses!
Another hit with the family, seed extraction has begun to replant next year.

Default Disease Strikes

Matsu-Express, not tasted yet, picked my first yesterday and noticed the plant is not doing so well:

Taxi also seems to be dying, maybe because it's a determinate?

Any ideas on what's hitting these?

Default The score so far

Taxi gets a 10/10 on look, color and texture but 1/10 for taste.

Jaune Flammee gets a 10/10 on look, color and texture but 1/10 for taste.

Cosmonaut Volkov: taste is not there, didn't like the texture.

ISPL: I have yet to taste a complex flavor, it's just tangy.

The above most likely will not be returning next year.

Black Cherry, Lindy's Little Krim, Cherokee Lime and GGWT are so far this year's winners.

I need to taste more Paul Robeson before a preliminary verdict.

Tasting MSE, Rebel Yell and Stupice still to come.

Well the season is on for you at last. This is what it is all about. I'm so glad that you are finding a few that you like and will be on your grow list again. I too love Black Cherry and GGWT and ISPL.

As for your Mat-Su and Taxi, they have powdery mildew and probably gray mold too. What I do is to use Bill's bleach spray and then follow up the next day with either copper spray or daconil. http://www.tomatoville.com/showthread.php?t=28509 This is a long thread, but well worth your time spent reading.

Thanks for the bleach spray thread, should be easy to deploy. Would removing the infected leaves delay the spread? Simply wondering as I think at most we have one month left for this season.

How does ISPL taste for you? mine is super acidic, I am unable to discern a complex flavor....

Yes, no matter what disease issue you have, always remove the infected leaves once you know what condition it is that you are fighting. With all of the rain that you have had it is hard to avoid these two fungal diseases. Perhaps you need to put raincoats on them.

ISPL is well balanced here. The flavor does vary from year to year. Some years have been meh and then others it was terrific. PM me at the end of the season and I will gladly send you some of my seed as well as a few others that you might like to grow.

What a beautiful thread and so reassuring to know that other people fight the same problems...
Your results with GGWT makes me start the next season right now - I have seeds!

Best, Baba
