I plant tomatoes in pots. What is the best way to control thrips?

Are saying that you have had TSWV (Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus) caused by thrips in the past, which is a purpling of the leaves from the veins outward until the plant dies?

Commercial farmers have tried and failed with even the strongest, most objectionable insecticides and pesticides. They saw no significant control of thrips, since they travel from far away, bite the plant once -- infecting it -- and move on to the next plant. There is no time for them to succumb to pesticides.

If you were afflicted with this problem last year, then one of the few solutions that seems to have gained any traction is the use of foil pie plates or aluminium foil mulch under the plant, which seems to discourage the thrips from approaching the normally dark undersides of the leaves towards the bottom of the plant. That's theory at least.
