Finally was able to get the old coop ready for new birds and thought I'd share a few pictures of the little guys. Already producing eggs for us, and as gentle as can be. An exciting and fun addition to the garden.

My neighbor has quite a few of these. Loud as hell and one ugly sound they make. But the eggs are way more nutritious than chicken eggs.

In our backyard we have two families of about 6 and both have laid eggs somewhere. The sounds these guys make are beautiful And the male (I think its the male) watches out for his family by sitting high while his family walks around and plays in the grass. Its very sweet! I love them!!!

Then it must be a different species. The ones my neighbor has are always caged. They never get to roam around and they make one ugly croaking sound.

Are you sure the neighbors don't have guineas? They are really loud but I have never heard quail make much loud noise.

I asked the guy in person. They are quail.
He was fired from his last job and he purchased a few acres in Wisconsin and wanted to start a quail business. So far he did not move from his old home. My guess is that he will never move as his wife has a great job and is earning more than enough for both of them.
His quail have been very quiet during winter but are as loud as heell when the weather gets warmer.

These are coturnix quail aka Japanese Quail. Very quiet thus far and in comparison to Bobwhites or chickens for that matter. I have read that the males get more vocal during mating season, but I also find it to be a pleasant call. They have been a fun addition so far and the eggs have been delicious.

When I was in TN visiting family, I was driving up the driveway and spotted a Bobwhite quail and took a couple of pics as it made it's retreat. I was showing the pics to my sister and she was jealous because she has lived there for many years and never seen one.
They are in PA but here in the NW part of the state I have never seen one. My dad used to see them where he grew up in the Boswell Jennerstown part of the state.

I have a nephew who raises quail for the local Dept of Natural Resources to release into the wild to try and replenish the wild population. He starts with several hundred eggs and releases about half that number each year. Difficult to keep them all alive he says.

We used to have bobwhite quail visit the bird feeding stations in our yard but it has been several years since we have seen them. Too many foxes, coyotes, bobcats, raccoons and other predators in the area I think.
