Default Tomato Plants Have Grown 15" In Past Month

Planted out exactly 1 month ago - April 4, and most of the tomatoes have added 15" in new growth with many over the fourth rung of the cages:

Cascade Lava (left), Dark Galaxy (right):

Dragon's Eye, Goose Creek:

Dona F1, Carmello F1:

Momotaro, Momotaro Fight:

Brandy Boy:

Two "volunteer" plants which self-seeded over the Winter:

The plant on the right appears to be Pink Berkeley Tie-Dye.

The cukes are doing well in the warm Spring weather. DIVA and Sweet Success:

And the Heritage 6-4 NuMex have adapted to their new EarthBox home quite well:

I was able to attach the Burpee cucumber cage perfectly around the EarthBox "clamped" in using the stand as the base support.

Looking really good!! What can you tell me about Momotaro Fight? I have not heard of this one. How does it differ and compare to Momotaro??

Nice setup. Did you make the cages fit your tubs?

I have grown Momotaro for several years now. It is a very flavorful variety - the most popular tomato in Japan, as I understand.

The Momotaro "Fight" variant is supposed to have improved disease tolerance:

jbond,

The cages I adapt are the standard pea/cucumber fence units from Gurneys or Burpee.

http://www.burpee.com/gardening-supp...n2pd=sh&catId=

They can be formed to wrap nicely around the EarthTainer and also, fit perfectly on to the EarthBox with a simple modification.

Thanks for the reply. Momotaro has been calling to me, it's about time I procure it. Search for the "fight" version has begun. I'm gonna start getting the materials together for an EarthTainer too. Cheers.

Hi Raybo,

They're looking great! I really like how you've pruned the plants. Nice and airy . What is the spacing between the cage wires?

Hi Anne,

The cage rungs are 8 inches apart from rung #2 up to rung #10. Four inches from dirt surface level up to the first rung.

Thank you for the reply Raybo. I have heard others praise Momotaro and it sounds like I need to give it a go next year. I need to do a search on Momotaro Fight next.. Is this your first year growing it?

Ginny,

Yes - first year with a direct comparison. I am hoping no significant difference as the standard Momotaro seeds are more readily available. (A TV member had purchased the "Fight" seeds when in Japan and sent them to me.)
