Hey All!
I'm in … well, sort of. I just filled my first 4 packs with germination mix and then read my garden notes - about two weeks before I can start to germinate. (I graft, so tomatoes need an extra week or so for recovery.) Simple green house. I allow a few of my concrete reinforcing wire cages to puff out into half circles on my south-facing driveway. The structure is really solid in winds. The concrete drive absorbs solar all day and releases it at night. I have plastic and old sheets on hand for the really cold nights. The plant flats are very easy to slide in and out - or - I just lift off the entire wire caging. And so far, no deer munching observed. Jeff |

This morning I started 'Conover's Colossal' asparagus seed from Baker Creek. It's an oldie from the 1800's and is supposed to produce big spears. I guess I'll find out in three years. Last time I did this it took ten days for germination. That was a different variety but it should be about the same now. There are 24 started and they should be ready to plant out in about two months.

Pepper seeds are in the soilless mix Feb 1. This is 2-3 weeks earlier than normal to see if the plants will be bigger and stronger by transplant time, first week of May. Everything else will wait until March 1 to sow.

I've learned my lesson about starting tomato seeds too early. The weather doesn't cooperate and I end up with leggy weak transplants that sulk when I finely get them into the ground. I'll be starting them at the beginning or mid March. However, a couple weeks ago I sowed some nicotiana and pot marigold seeds and they are up and out on my patio under a little cloche.

The earliest I can get started is the beginning of April. I am getting twitchy.

I got those broccoli and cabbage seeds started yesterday. Next week I'm supposed to sow the first radishes and turnips in the garden but we got 2" of rain today (so far) and it might be too wet. But I can start more scallions to go under the lights.

61 each 6 week old starts are in their rows
Old school around here is "finish planting on Good Friday", guess we are newfangled early Earthworms in every shovel full of earth, must like the killed Sudex roots Redbud and fruit trees in bloom everywhere, soil temp is a bit lower than hoped for but the rains are coming and this side of them is for sure dry enough to plant http://www.tomatoville.com/album.php?u=6756

Hi, never had a problem using different mixes and techniques. One constant I have for all seed starting: heat mats. Makes a big difference. |
