Loose soil helps with some vegetables. If you want long straight carrots, best plant in loose soil. I started my raised beds for 2 reasons. to control PH for my blueberries, and to keep my dog out. i could train his not to go in the raised beds, but in ground plantings he would trample them to death. In the above photos my in ground blackberries have a fence next to them, only way to keep the dog from running through. He still walks on the bed, he just doesn't get that he needs to stay on grass only. I tried a few methods, but the raised beds just worked so well. The fence helps with the blackberries as he would run through them and rip canes out and such, with the fence he maybe steps in it from time to time, but the canes can take that
