Besides a food bank, there are also places such as The Mission here that house and feed homeless people, and don't forget the senior centers or the meals on wheels people. A church is a good place to arrange to leave a free basket with produce or plants for the taking. Adopt a grade school class and donate plants to them to take home and grow.

I'm sorry to hear about your friend.

Here are some ideas on what to do with the tomatoes:
* Pickle and can them. If they're firm cherries, they're probably great for that.
* Use them to assist in making chile sauce.The Ball Blue Book of Preserving has a lot of cool recipes.
* Dry them.
