History behind why and when it was called Surpriz and what it should look like.

Carolyn, from this link, it reads that this tomato, Coeur De Jade, is not Surpriz, but rather that it is a stabilized segregate of Surpriz, and Surpriz was a cross of Berkeley Tie Die with? So Surpriz should not look like Coeur de Jade.

Correct.

All I was trying to do was to indicate where the name surpriz came from, and reading what I wrote I should not have said this is what it looked like.

https://www.google.com/search?q=Surp..._AUIBigA&dpr=1

Read the link above for much more info about it and not all that was said in my original link from Heritage turned out to be true, pictures as well in above link.

Read the opening one from Tville with lots of input.

I knew I had the above link in my faves from Tville, didn't want to spend time looking for it so regoogled, if you will.

Default Hillbilly

So pretty, heirloom bicolor, RL, indet., low to moderate production, but not sure it had a fair test this horrible season. Fruit usually larger than mine .Taste was good, 7/10. Worth a grow at least once.

Default Chocolate Stripes PL

This is a stable(I think) off type since Chocolate Stripes has RLs. I am going to make seeds available because it was and continues to be super productive, was the first to ripen this season, and it is DELICIOUS. most fruit 5-6 oz, a few were 8 oz. Taste 9/10

Marsha,

Did this one taste as good this year as last year? I'm growing it again from the original seeds and already have antho under the leaves. I'm hoping for that same gwr with dark antho and stripes that I got last year (I didn't save any seeds of it last year) so had to go back to what I had left of the original seeds from Laura.

That hillbilly looks tasty. Sort of one of those classics everybody should try at some point. I wonder sometimes with all of our excitement about new varieties, (me included) if we aren't losing something by not growing the classics.
Especially new growers going straight into the new ones with out the benchmark of the classics to compare with. Not sure if that is good or bad or if it doesn't matter... ? Hmmm

The beauty of Hillbilly took me completely by surprise. It has new growth coming out, so I might just get more fruit.
Karen you are right on. The classics are classics because they are good enough to be.

Ginny, the one I grew last year had dark flesh, and no antho, so this one is different.

Default Peg's Round Orange

These pretty little 3-5 oz fruits have a lovely bright flavor, on the acid side. RL indet but stays under 5', with many fruits. Taste 8/10 because I prefer a sweeter tomato. Those who like a strong acid content will think the taste is even better.
