If I understand what you mean : There are 2 versions of Big Beef , (1) F1 and (2) OP.
Last year I grew one of each side by side . The OP version was a dud. I pulled it. But F1 kept fruiting til October.

Yes. Deborah. Supposedly somebody tried to stabilize the F1 or de-hybrididze it. But it seems that did not work well. Last year I bought 2 OP plants the I learned all about it. Returned one and kept one. Then I also found F! version and I bought one too.
I grew both in the same bed .... the rest of story.

I don't know the history of this one, but usually the OP is the result of someone de-hybridizing/stabilizing an F1. If that's the case with this one then the Big Beef F1 would have been the starting point and the OP would be the end result.

Oh, and the F1 seeds are bred by a seed company and they typically never reveal what varieties were used. That's how they force us to buy their seeds every time we run out!

Here's one that got started at idigmygarden while T'ville was down. I'm especially interested if anyone has grown them side by side, and if one was earlier than the other?

There haven't been many replies here, and definately nothing to pin a decision on. I'm going to give Goliath a try. I only have room for one hybrid (in addition to Sun Gold, of course).

Good question Steve! And thank you to those who answered here. I thought that OP means the un-tampered with "original" and that the following "F's" were the offspring. I really appreciate the education! So the final answer is that I plant the F1. I sure hope to find a plant at the garden center.

Steve,
I have seen couple of responses ( post #14 and #40) to your BB vs Goliath inquiry.
Evidently the latter is not as popular. The best way is to grow them side by side your self. I have read numerous side by side reviews on Big Beef and Better Boy. Even then I have decided to grow them both myself and find out

Gardeneer,

Strange you haven't seen the three responses (posts 4, 12 and 34) that are positive to Goliath. Like I said, I only have room for one of them. My decision is based on the Cornell reviews, where both have 4.1 stars for yield, while BB has 3.8 stars and Goliath 4.4 stars for taste.

Aunt Ruby's German Green versus Emerald Evergreen.
Paul Robinson versus Indian Stripe.

last year was my 2nd time trying because of all the people saying they are so good.but it just didnt like my soil i guess.it was a big plant and every thing around it produced but for me nope.the taste was awful but maybe i picked it to soon.

i set them out feb20th and they were about a foot and a half tall when i planted
