Which cherries for BIG tomato flavor?

I cant believe Riesentraube didn't produce, last year mine got so big tall the FAA made me put a red light on top so small air craft could see it at night.8)

It put out a lot of good big tomato tasting fruit too.

I grew Tess's Land Race Currant last year. The plant got tall and produced an abundant supply of tiny red tomatoes which produced all summer up till hard frost.

The flavor was just slightly sweet and acidic.Had a nice tomato taste, but I found the skin a little tough. It was good but not great. Wont grow again.

I did grow White current and absolutely loved it. The Plant produced abundantly all summer. The taste is explosive and so good, but is sweeter then Tess's Land Race Current. I am definately growing again in my garden every year.

While I haven't grown it, I remember Casino Chips being recommended for big tomato flavor.

I'll second Casino Chips. It's a monster sized cherry. Also Chadwicks, tastes like a tomato should.

I guess since I posted a reply - I should mention one that we like a lot. Porter when grown in dry hot conditions tastes like old fashion tomatoes. Slightly more acidic but still balanced. A tomato you would get in a salad at a really good steak house.

Best "cherry" variety was Garnet for my south FL garden last season. Smaller than a cherry but HUGE tomato taste. Great producer with dark red/bronze color and tons of seeds. Want some seeds??? Send me PM..have TONS!

Rubinka is one with big tomato flavor. A hint of sweetness, but when I bite into one I can taste that earthy classic "red" tomato flavor that pinks just don't have.

I too have appreciated Tommy Toe and Black Cherry. Another little fellow we've grown is one called "Angel". It is red with an oval shape. The seeds were given to me by my son-in-law who'd saved them from fruit he'd bought. They taste really good, and other folks I've given these plants to like them as well.

One small variety I intend growing again is open-pollenated Gold Nugget. I was surprised at their strong flavour. Plus these are meant to have the added advantage of being suited to a cooler area.

Other small tomatoes I've grown are Gardener's Delight, Matts Wild Cherry, Peacevine Cherry, Sweet Raisin, Principe Borghese, Grappoli d'Inverno and Hssiao His Hung Shih. I only grew them for one season... and while they were 'OK', especially cooked or dried.... they didn't have the same appeal when eaten raw as the fruits I first mentioned. Grown at another time or place, they might be wonderful.
