burpees seed starter and mold

I started my pepper plants in those small burpees peat pellet cups. All seemed well until I found a white mold growing on outside of cups, and across some areas of peat. seedlings seem fine and are growing, but is the mold a problem??

I had it with Jiffy Seed Starter and no problems.

That happens to me allot but I try to let them dry out a little before I water again. I also transplant them into 6 or 8" clay pots and discard the peat pots completely when they are big enough.

Good idea Robin, when are they big enough?? They were sowed on 4/4/09, and sprouted around the 4/11-4/12 mark. Also, thanks Ed for the reply.

You can transplant with they have their first set of true leaves, but have care not to disrupt their roots.

No, the white mold is not a problem, just scrape it off and vow to never use peat cups or cells or pots again b/c they also wick water.

When I moved to my current location in 1999 I threw out a carton of 500 minus maybe 10 peat pots. That's how much I dislike them.

Don't let Burpee know - they will want to raise the price to you and tell you it is beneficial mold - Ha Ha!!!

Burpee's Improved Peat Pots...now with enhanced fugal action! Our special strain of fungus, which will coat the exterior of the pots a pleasing white, serves both as a growth enhancer and as visual notification of the need to water. $10.00 for 15 pots.

Right on!!! my thought exactly - but they will say it is a hybrid fungus no doubt!!! HA!!!!
