Seed from green tomatoes
I raised a seedling of Bear Creek for my in laws. It took all my seed and I got 1 plant. The plant was loaded with tomatoes but was toppled (in a large container) during A storm. A number of fruits fell off. I have them sitting around, should any of them ripen, should the seeds be viable or would it best to wait for the small fruits on the plant to grow and mature?

Hi,
If the fruits are mature green, they will ripen in time and when they do you can collect the seeds. They should be fine. Seed collected from unripe fruit is not mature and won`t store or germinate properly so best to wait at least until blushing KarenO |

Thanks Karen. Judging by the age of the fruits, the shade of the green I suspect most if not all of these should eventually ripen. I would imagine I'd see blushing within the next week or so.

If the seed does not look good when they ripen, then I've got you covered. PM me and I will send you some that I grew out last year.

I harvested a ton of seeds from the house ripened fruit. They'll ferment over the next few days. I got to try the variety the other day as well. I must say Bear Creek--WOW! A very sweet and rich tomato, meaty texture yet still enough juice. I haven't grown a ton of sweet tomatoes but this is probably the most heavily skewed to an intense sweet tomato I've had.

If you've got a bunch of seeds, you can use a couple to test their germination now so you don't have an unpleasant surprise next season.

Thanks all!! I've got plenty of seed. It looks good. Just to be safe I've got a few in a damp paper towel in a baggie.
