when to stop sowing inside
I live in PA I was wondering when is a good time to stop sowing my seeds inside for outside?
I like to sow my seeds inside for the 6-8 weeks inside before I put them outside. I seem to have a better survival rate this way. I have been sowing groups of seeds every 2 weeks inside.example 3 different kinds 10 plants each. should I stop sowing my last set on my frost date which is may 10 which the last set will be in my house until the middle of June or should I stop before then? |

What plants are we talking, tomatoes? Are you in the mountains? June is very late for setting out tomatoes in your climate. I have tried and they don't produce as much. I would get them in much before that.
I would also have more variety than 3 types, but I'm sure you have seen our huge lists. That is our hobby/addiction/ Somewhere in between is perfectly normal. - Lisa |

hi Smileyb, I also live in PA (SEPA) and I start my tomatoes mid march inside, Mid may is supposedly the perfect date to get them outside however I usually try and get them outside the last week in April for 1 week still in pots to harden them off and then in the ground by May 1st.

smiley, where abouts in PA are you? It can make a huge difference. Of course, if you are a Tomatohead, the answer to your question would be "When you run out of seeds!"

My market for selling plants dries up on about Memorial Day. I'll stop sowing tomatoes after the first week of April.

Third week of May this year. the plan is to set half a dozen 70-80 day determinate canners around the 4th of July. The Summers are extending further into Fall and the weather is more stable than the Spring. The good weather has been holding till Halloween or longer now, I also have a way to cover them, just in case.

I have been guilty of sowing the last ones in the beginning of June... The thing is, tomato plants grow rapidly then and almost catch up their predecessors.
But is it wise, probably not... |

Unless you live in Fl and CA somewhere, direct sowing out side will be too late for those gardening in zones 8 and lower, even in TX. Because you want to beat the heat. In zone 7b ( north Atl, GA) I did direct sown some roma (beside my regular planting) if worked but the fruits ripened maybe more than a month late.
If you have a cold frame, you can do it that way too. Gardeneer |

I do have more than 3 varieties about every 1-2 weeks I am doing about 3-4 different varities of 10 each I do not want them all to come due at once
Most of my tomatoes are 70-80 day tomatoes most are intermidate I have a few that are determate very few are shorter or longer times I am doing other herbs, veggies and flowers also.Half of everything I am planting is tomatoes I got a feeling I am doing way more tomato plants than I can handle but just can not stop. I want to try all of them but I know thats impossible do you think I might have a tomatoe problem? |

Hi Smileyb,
I'm in NEPA. I've been to Sarver a few times, nice little town. You're in zone 6a so for anything you want to grow outside you should be able to keep sowing inside until the 1st or 2nd week of April (3-4 weeks before transplant). This will give them time to grow and harden off before planting out between May 1-15th depending on your forecast. I usually can't plant here until at least May 31st, but always hopeful to push it up a couple of weeks if the weather cooperates. |

We need to start an AA for the tomato heads. Unfortunately, do not think it would help. I know I would be the first to tumble off the wagon!!! |
