is the New Mexico Chili Pepper institute the best place to get pure seed? They have a $20 minimum order. I guess I could get a hat and some seed.

I've been fighting with myself for about a month now on growing it or not. On the plus side, it'd be really cool to grow it and can keep away wild elephants. Should an elephant stampede happen around here, I'll be safe.
On the con, I have nowhere to use it at. And I can't even think of a place to give them away or sell them to.
My family doesn't eat anything spicier than bell pepper so Christmas gifts are out of the equation as well.
What is everyone going to do with this pepper?

There are other sources for seed of the Bhut Jolokia and trades are becoming more frequent. I have a few to spare if you need some, without the hat or any fee.

Good luck with the deer!

You possibly won't have ripe Bhut Jolokia pods early enough this year to help much. Never had much luck using pepper dust or sprays as a pest deterrent anyways as animals just don't react to pain the way we do. Expect deer would just go on to the next plant etc etc.

I just ordered 3 Bhut J from an on-line nursery that I've bought pepper and tomato plants from for 4 years now. Min order is 12 plants and it's going to cost $50 including postage, but insures that I'll have strong plants if my seed-starting fails. Got a late start this year, but my tomato sprouts look great. Peppers not so great.

Get an electric fence for the deer is my suggestion. Not so expensive or unsightly as you might think.

If you grind the dried peppers & seeds in it and then use it for coffee, you're coffee is going to have a verrrrrrrrrrrrry different flavour than what you'd expect.

Great point, Zana -

Thank you! I'm actually going to be doing a lot of grinding in the next week or so, and I think I'll get a dedicated (inexpensive!) machine for peppers...

(I have the nitrile gloves already!)

My Bhut's are the strongest, biggest peppers I have. I started them right
before christmas. Will be planting them in containers outside in April.
Don't know what I'll do with the peppers. I think I'll bag a few so no cross-
pollination, and give them away next year.

How soon do you bag? Anytime before the flower appears?

I'd like to bag one or two myself before the season ends if possible...

I've never bagged before, but you have to do it before flower opens. That
way no bee's can get to it, possibly cross-pollinating it.

Ok, so the bee only pollinates once the flower opens fully?

Thanks, roper -
