green when ripe hearts?
It occurred to me yesterday that I have never heard of a green heart shaped tomato. Do they exist? Just curious

Not yet Jenn, not that I know of, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time.
Craig and others have suggested certain crosses to develop them, and who knows where and when that might be happening right now. And of course there's always the possibility than a current green when ripe might show a heart shaped fruit via mutation.

Wow...it would be so much fun to try to develop one!....maybe Craig will read this thread...I would like to know what varieties he has considered using.
If the name isn't taken, I think that "Envy" would be a great name for a green heart Jenn |

Jenn, Craig probasbly won't be reading this thread b'c he's so stretched for time right now, but has has suggested crossing a yellow with a green when ripe, which seems the best way to go.
Perhaps something lucious like Aunt Gerties Gold , a PL, with an RL green when ripe such as Cherokee Green, and now this is me talking, so that you know when your cross has occured, if using AGG as the female recipient.

Carolyn,
Craig thought that could lead to a Green heart in successive generations? Does AGG have some heart shaped parents? What is the rational? Greg |

Greg, AGG is a family heirloom and no one knows what the parents are.
Would you buy maybe Cherokee Green ( or similar) X Herman's Yellow or Orange Strawberry or Yellow Oxheart or even White Oxheart or similar?

Carolyn,
If I get discover that my AGG X Cherokee is Cherokee Green I will send you some seeds :-) Until then I am growing some Orange Stawberry and Cherokee Green so I could plant them next to each other and see what comes out next year? So Envy will be the name huh? ;-) Greg |

Why take chances Greg? Just do the cross yourself.

Carolyn,
Why take chances Greg? Just do the cross yourself Why not? Because I could barely save pure seed last year much less do that fine machine work :-) I will try just because you said so but I will still plant them next to each other just in case I screw up ;-) Heck, I got 30% crosses this year with doing no work at all. I can't miss. I got the link that someone posted to the Oriental website that showed the method of hybrid seed production. I have read it many times. I will give it a try and see. The Green hearts are in the bag ;-) Greg |
