Or ((about)) 0.36 cubic feet in a gallon.

I doubt it is dry gallons as this isn't used that much.

Man oh man Worth so I do in fact need to find a cheaper solution then wonder soil.

I can buy the local compost from the county for $16.00 a yard and used that as a fertlizer base. It's enough to fill the back of my pick up.

Do any of you have a cheap recipe?

Why the grow bags The soil looks as good if not better than mine.
Amending it would be cheaper and less headache.

Hush now.

Embrace the Grow Bags.. come to the dark side..

A simple formula:

2 Parts Compost
1 Part Peat
1/2 to 1 Part Perlite

You have to play with the ratios a bit. But that would get you started.

Houston we have a problem.

Soil, is a persnickety thing to try to figure out. Some soil expands, some expands and then settles down a bit. You get the idea.

I wasn't familiar with "Wonder Soil" so I did some looking. It seems that HD sells it in the 2.5 Cu. Ft. bags that you speak of.

One of my questions was as to whether or not it is compressed of fluffy. On the package it says that it expands to "up to 70 Liters".

So 70 L converted to gallons = 18.492 So we will say 18 gallons.

You are interested in filling 10 Gallon bags. Nursery gallons are different then US Gallons. Unfortunately HD gives the wrong dimensions on the product. The dimensions they give are for a 21 Gallon bag.

We could assume that the bags, in real life hold 8 gallons of soil. I think that's a fair guess.

So 1 bag of Wonder Soil would fill 2, 10 gallon bags, with some soil left over. If the bags hold 8 gallons, then 4 bags of Wonder Soil would fill 9, 10 gallon bags, with nothing left.

You want to fill 50 bags. So at the rate of 8 gallons, that would be 22 bags of Wonder Soil. With a little left over.

That's about $417...
Yep I am not spending that kind of cabbage this year. Thank you all for the math.

The soil does look good Worth and i have worked on it for weeks. I have a almost 1 whole yard of compost tilled in. The sun is the problem it sets behind all those trees at about 4pm ish. I also get a lil bit of shade around 11am to 12noon from another tree in front of it.

Err the ole lady is kinda mad at me for knocking down the trees i have. So i am kinda stuck.

Do you think anything will grow with 6 maybe 7 hours of sun a day?

You bet it will you should see what I am getting away with.

I completely will agree with the compost bit. I know some folks swear by growing in straight compost, but I don't see it. Those same people then talk about all the other stuff they add:

Rock Dust
Azomite
Kelp Meal
Bone Meal
Blood Meal
Eye Of Newt

Thats no longer "Pure Compost". Thats some kinda Hippy Bouillabaisse.

2 yards of Compost $32.00
1 yard of Peat
1 yard of Perlite

How many yards did I need to fill all those bags? Here we go again!

I think you mean cubic. Your slipping.

Anyhow, you would need a total of approx. 2.5 yds. of mixed soil. You would have plenty with your numbers.

Bada Bing. Ill be here all night.

In regards to the recipe. You don't have to use straight perlite. You could mix it up with Vermiculite. Or dare I say it, "Sharp Sand". If you can find that. The Perlite/Vermiculite bit is the most expensive part.

Also, you might start small scale. Go ahead and get a load of the compost, you can always use that in the garden.

But get small quantities of the other stuff and mix it up small scale. Every bit of compost is different. Make sure it drains ok for you, etc.
