Default Trouble with Ground Cherries

I have lost 3 plants to a bug, I am guessing. They are all in some form of raised bed. All the plants I have lost looked healthy and had been growing nicely. I find the plant laying on the ground wilted. Watering does not help. Eventually I have to pull the plant form the garden. I have noted on all of them that stalk at where it goes into the ground has turned brown. I have opened the stalk to see if there is a critter in there but I have not seen anything. Anyone have any ideas what might be going on and how to keep the 6 other plants from having the same problem?

Thanks!
Phal

Your description sounds like damping off (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damping_off). How large were they when they fell over?

The latest one was about 12 inches tall. I think the others were about that size also, maybe a little shorter.
