A week ago I wasn't seeing any scapes here either. Yesterday I noticed scapes starting to emerge from a few of my German Whites. No scapes on any other varieties yet.

I noticed them starting about a week ago with the Music. Most varieties are scaping now but a bit small for eating. I like them about 18" long including the umbel.

They are about a week early. I usually start picking during the first week in June.

Last year I picked my scapes right before we left for vacation on June 10th. It looks like I may have to pick those on the German Whites and Music within the next couple of days. They started curling yesterday. No sign of yet on the German Red or Spanish Roja that I'm growing for the first time this year.

I had the worst harvest this year. I think I had really poor soil from a delivery from the local landscaping company, despite stirring in quite a bit of poultry manure and adding a lot of coffee grounds. Plus, we had a really warm winter.
But, next year, I will do better. Better soil, better varieties. I will plant more soft neck, more elephant garlic. They seem to do well here. Plus, I have some garlic that came from a T-ville AZ member which should do well.
I had ordered last year's garlic from Yong's in south AZ but they are at a higher altitude. I'm not sure that the garlic was suited for Phoenix.

Nice pics Masbustelo. What varieties are those? When did you plant them?

Thanks for the info Masbustelo. Thanks to all who are sharing! This whole thread is quite interesting. I went out and checked mine yesterday and found one variety that had scapes in the looped phase. Belarus. I missed them because they are in the middle rows and they aren't easy to spot ONE MONTH EARLIER THAN LAST YEAR. Yikes! I also had Korean Mountain and one section of Spanish Roja and one row of German White in the early straight scape phase. I inspected the bulbs of the softnecks to check their progress and there has been no swelling as of yet.

on wednesday i looked at my garlic and a lot of it has scapes, 1 plant already had a full curl already.

in 2011 i did not record when i cut scapes, in 2010 i cut scapes 6/8, 2009 6/20 and 6/25, prior years no record. so it seems that this is not early really.

i am digging garlic earlier with each passing year. since 2007 is the 1st year i grew garlic it seems that was a late year and not the norm as i have remembered.
dug garlic:
2011 7/5 and 7/13
2010 7/7
2009 7/17
2008 7/19 and 7/22
2007 7/26.

I checked mine yesterday and have none forming yet at all on either the hard or softnecks. I usually have nice full scapes the end of June, and find the few I missed when I get back from vacation a couple weeks later. My garlic is usually ready to pull the last half of August.

This is my first year growing Inchelium Red softneck. I planted in early December. No scapes, but the greens are really tall (3') and starting to turn. Is it possible that I should harvest so soon? It never got below 25º this winter, but also hasn't been warm at all.
I'd really appreciate some advice.
