Porter / Porter Pride
Does anyone have a photo of a porter tomato next to a porter pride (or porter improved)?
Im growing both this year for the first time, or so I believe. Im just looking for an idea of what to expect between the two. |

Ozone, I probably do have a picture somewhere on this PC. I bought the Porter's Pride in a six pack last year, and they look exactly the same as Porter. What I bought in the six-pack may have been mislabeled?

Porter is an egg shaped 2 oz pink tomato.
Porter's Pride is a round 3-4 oz red tomato. Porter's Pride is sometimes known as Porter's Improved. Both excel in Texas heat. MikeInCypress

I grew Porter spring season 2014, and they were round, super productive, and disease free. They seemed red to me but I didn't know enough about pinks then. I bought the seeds from Everwilde.com. I just checked their site, and they say they are red globes.
I am growing Porter's Pride now; I got the seeds from the swap here; just getting to final transplant. so no fruit yet. Porter's Pride/Improved Porters always get better press than just regular Porters. Maybe I grew Porter's Pride all along. |

I have grown both many times. Based on what I have grown the one on the right looks like Porter. The one on the left does not look like either. Porters Pride is oblate (slightly flattened globe) about twice the size of Porter and bright red. There is a lot of confusion about the various porter tomatoes among gardeners and seed & plant vendors alike. After spending considerable time researching them I am not convinced that Improved Porter and Porters Pride are the same variety though most believe that they are.

I agree with you ABlindHog. I think there is something askew there.
Porter is our favorite. When we first tasted it, my wife and I both said, ("Now this is a tomato.") We grew CP the same year and tossed the Cherokee Purple into the compost bin. Porter was developed in Stephenville, Texas. I like this description http://www.everwilde.com/store/Porte...ato-Seeds.html I planted out two more Porter seed cells today 2-29-2016. My wife and I want to learn how to can tomatoes - why not start with the best? |

The year I grew Porter (seeds from Everwilde.com) I kept the plant alive for a full year. On August 10th I picked my last fruit. When it got really hot, I rolled 4 EB out about 7 AM and under the porch (shade) by 1PM. After months of this (it was a drag), I only kept the EB with Porter and the EB with Marglobe. Both produced in the fall season and the Porter tomatoes were fewer than the first growing season (golf ball size) , but they were much LARGER. So can the difference is size be related to # of tomatoes produced vs being a separate strain?
Salt - So you can still start seeds for springtime? Amazing that your old standby is still the favorite after trying so many. ABlingHog - Thanks for the info: have you grown all 3 at the same time? |
