Good, Wi-Sunflower answered the question about Brussel Sprouts and below freezing weather. Mine get damaged at about 10-15 F and killed in the low single digits (we have no snow cover to insulate). Cabbages and other brassicas, in my experience, are a little less hearty. I don't even try to pick BS until after a heavy frost or light freeze.

We will get down to around zero tonight and tomorrow night and I think that spells doom for the remainder of my fall garden.

Many of the cole crops will take more cold than you might think, as long as it's just for over nite to about a day and then gets warmer. If it stays in the low 20s for several days straight, without getting back above freezing in between, that will kill them.

as it turned out we got no where near frost or freeze. And my blueberry bush is blooming like crazy and has for a few weeks or so, but hasnt set any fruit.

We experienced a light frost here last night, too; -15F with a wind chill of -35F. And we are in a warm area compared to the frozen north of Mn, Wi and Mi.

This was intended as light-hearted humor, but I really do sympathize with the folks in the North-East who are having a rough time of it this week. Hopefully, it won't last too long for them.

Over here across the pond I can't remember it being this cold in a long time. They are using Icebreakers on the inland waterways so the barges can make their coal deliveries to the power stations. At least we won't have much of a insect problem this year. Ami

It is 12 F on my screened-in porch this morning. This is not a good thing, Martha.

It had to be someone up there in Minnesota who fell asleep at their post and let this cold air overrun the border.

I'll probably set up a court-marshal as soon as we find the real perpetrator. Leaving your post is a serious offense.

my family is blaming us for this cold weather, claiming we brought it down with us when we moved from the U.P. this fall. people at work say its not usually like this. i dunno. at least we left behind most of the snow. 154 inches so far near houghton. blue skies, sunshine, and minus 6 to start the day in sandusky. made for an invigorating walk with the dog.

Brrrr. It's 12:54 and we finally warmed up to 27 degrees F. I realize this isn't comparable to temps below 0 or having to use icebreakers in the rivers to keep the channels open, but for Georgia, this is cold. My old dog was out to do his thing this morning and back in so fast I had to laugh.
