Default Mutant

This Tumbling Tom Junior Yellow germinated 2 weeks after its siblings and dear oh dear, I have had to accept it's not going to make it Instead of growing true leaves, it grew 3 more cotyledons and then stopped. It hasn't grown an inch in 3 weeks, so into the compost pile it goes. But I thought you'd like a look at my weird little mutant first

I get a few of those every year. I wonder why it happens.

That's strange. I have never seen one of those. Thanks for sharing.

I think the shoot meristem (growing point) didn't develop properly in the seed, so the seedling germinates and grows out cotyledons but then stops. In your case, it looks like a leaf may have replaced the shoot tip.

Since it has two true leaves below that point, you could cut the mule section off and the plant may grow new shoots where the true leaves meet the stem.

Can't tell if those are three true leaves or, more likely, three leaflets of a single leaf (in which case there would not be axillary meristems where the blue lines are located).

Not much to lose by trying, however!

I agree! Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
Thanks again Phil for your input.

Its siblings are not potato-leaf tomatoes, they just have standard tomato leaves, so I don't think they're true leaves.
But anyway, it went into the compost bin yesterday so it's a moot point
