Yes, that purple parrot variety is lovely. They can look very different, too, with mixed colours in one bloom.

Yes I do think that it is the Labrador Fringed Tulip. That or Curly Sue, but I think it is Labrador. Definitely a fringed tulip and not a parrot.

There is no mention of Labrador Tulip on the Tesselaars website, but there are a number of other fringed tulips. I will forward the photo in question to them and get an answer from the growers.

Time I updated the activity at the garden of Woz. Over the past few months
Have relocated and split up the rhubarb plants, which have all taken off. Have relocated and split up most of the Garden Sorrel plants with more divisions than I need . Peas: Have planted and are now picking a dwarf sugar snap, Oregon Giant Snow Pea and two other Snow Peas from a small breeder, Joni's Taxi, a yellow podded variety, and Heather, a purple podded variety. These last two were hammered by the sparrows with the first two were untouched even though they are less than a meter apart. Thinking I will have a go at crossing the yellow and purple, hoping to get a red. Intend to set up a caged area where I cam grow peas without having to net each row over the next 12 months. Sweet Potato: Walked into the nursery area of the local green shed and saw some sweet potatoes the other day, so have 7 Orange (Beauergard), 3 Purple skin white flesh (prob North Star) and 5 purple flesh, white skin (prob Murasaki) in the ground. Tomatoes are nearly hardened off ready to grow. Eggplants: have two varieties up Hmong Red and Fairy Tale that are hardening off and will be planted shortly. Capsicums: Have Beaver Dam and seed from last years Candy Cane and Long Sweet Yellow hardening off. Did have Cal Wonder from last year and seed from a commercial yellow and orange fruit growing but lost the lot - not sure what happened. Cucumbers Long White and Sikkam, 3 of each in the ground. Zucchini 5 of Petals (McSee's Wifes online tag) Gold Rush x Jade Numbat Cross in the ground. Ready to plant Carrots, Parsnip and Beetroot. |

Whwoz, I would love to know more about the pea breeding process. Hope you have time to show us, when the time comes.

Bower, this will be my first attempt at pea breeding, so I will be documenting what I do for my own benefit and will post photos here. There are some good websites with lots of information about pea breeding about. Look for Rebsie Fairholms daughter of the soil blog as a starting point, seems a lot of people started playing with peas after her success

Whwoz, I was reading the other day that the SSW event is already affecting parts of Australia with warmer and dryer spring weather (sounds like a nice bonus, from here!) Not sure if that affects your area. Are you expecting a good summer for tomatoes?

Bower a lot of the country is very dry - driest on record type dry. We are fortunate in that we live in an area that generally has very reliable rainfall. We were very dry by our local standards up to the end of April - only 100mm but received 226 mm in August, which filled the dams locally and got the surface drains running. The rain we have had since has kept the ground full (we live on a drained swamp, soil is roughly 750 mm deep silt over 750mm "sub-soil" then clay, tomato beds are raised sandy loam) and it is just starting to firm up now. With our dam full we should be good as long as we do not get too many 40C+ days in a row.
McSee, at Maffra about 85km away, would have been lucky to get 25mm in August and is already hand watering and will have to keep doing so all summer. One big advantage that we have is we are on 9 acres surrounded by other farms, so any breeze moves through the plants. On the really hot days I water with soaker hoses facing up, wetting foliage about 8pm to cool plants overnight, our lows in summer rarely drop below 15C and humidity is low which makes a big difference. |

Planted 2 x Mat-Su Express, 2 x Midnight Sun a JBT and 9 "Trout Cox's - late appearing dwarf from the Beauty line. The Regina red micro will go into pots, just leaving the ramallet types for me to clean up a home for.

Garlic
A couple of weeks ago we had several thunderstorms with hail embedded in them, plus we copped another on Wednesday evening. Did not think about the Garlic that much but a lot of the leaves are shredded and I have started to lift them. The turbans are near there lifting time, a lot of the others are not, some still have 6 weeks of growing to do. Will lift what I have to and leave the rest. Hopefully nothing will rot
