Sailor's Luck F3

Here are two photos of tomatoes I grew from seed given to me by Jason Haynes of Tidewater region of Virginia. He calls his creation Sailor's Luck, and the seeds I grew were F3. I think the original cross was between Ethiopian Black and Vintage Wine, but I may be mistaken, and will have to check my notes again.





The vine was a strong, stout, upright, potato leaf plant that produced in clusters of three to five tomatoes; early-midseason, prolific, healthy, but faded in heat exceeding 90*F, and did not fully recover in the late season. Flavor is excellent, which really surprised me. Interior color is deep red.

How beautiful! I grew Vintage Wine last year and Ethiopian Black this year. Very interesting of a combination. I had trouble with Vintage Wine last year. It didn't seem to like my heat and humidity, but Ethiopian Black has been a strong plant through extreme conditions this year.

Did you find that your Sailor's Luck was juicy with a hint of sweetness to it?

Jason sent me Sgt Pepper and Bammer's Luck, which are out for seed production now, fingers crossed, and in an e-mail said he would send me Sailor's Luck for next year.

Rather than check your notes as to parentage after a while I found his e-mail where he describes how both Bammer's Luck as well as Sailor's Luck came to be, I didn't cut and paste the whole long paragraph but he also said he was confident that Sailor's Luck was now stable.

Knowing Jason I don't think he'd mind one bit if something he wrote to me helped clarify a situation for you and others. If I thought otherwise I would have asked his permission first.He is one wonderful person, but I've told you that before.

(OK, you asked about Bammer’s Luck. I sent Jon Schmuck of Alabama some F2 seeds from my cross of Vintage Wine x Black Ethiopian. That same year I found a lovely tomato that I call Sailor’s Luck. I used to be in the Navy and the name Sailor’s Luck seemed a fitting name for such a lucky find. Jon Schmuck (Bammer) found a nice tomato in the F2 and mailed me seeds. I trialed his segregation in my own garden the next growing season and found it to be just as lovely, yet a unique sister line to my find of Sailor’s Luck. I decided to call his F2 selection “Bammer’s Luck” since it was in his garden and his “luck” that found it. All F2 segregations are unique. Both Sailor’s Luck and Bammer’s Luck are two of my favorite creations to date. )

So Sailor's Luck came first followed by Bammer's Luck.

Neil L in IA is doing Sgt Pepper and Bammer for seed production but last I talked to him he didn't know if they'd make it b'c of all the flooding, and I must get back to him b/c he had first choice in varieties last Spring, I rotate that, to see what he might have since he chose what I thought were some of the best ones.

Carolyn, thanks for the info regarding Vintage Wine x Black Ethiopian.

From what I have viewed in photos and read online, Jon Schmuck's find (Bammer's Luck) differs from Sailor's Luck in that BL has yellow epidermis so appears more red/orange with green stripes, while SL has clear epidermis and appears more blood red with darker green stripes.

I went to the F3 seeds for this year's grow-out and found this one that appears same as or similar to Sailor's Luck that I've viewed online.

If you do not get seeds from your grower, and if Jason is agreeable, I can send you all you want, and you can distribute them thru your "experimental" offerings.

Not in that e-mail, but what I have written next to Bammer's Luck in my data book is brown fruit, olive stripes, PL.

By now Neil should know what he's getting for Bammer's Luck as to all plants giving the same fruits and all are PL, and not hearing from him about that I will try to call him this week.

He does have a computer at home, unlike Bill Minkey who I also have to call since he's doing seed production for me this year as well, so Neil walks down the road a bit to his nephew's place to use his computer.
