Dice-
thanks for your answer. I still don't know what Travis was getting at but now I don't care. Anyway it is a valid point that sometimes heirloom varieties from other places are heirlooms from here. For example my Ukranian friend raves about a tomato she kept calling "manymeker" and when I saw the tomato she was talking about I figured out it was the old heirloom "moneymaker."

On the other hand, there are some really cool tomatoes you can get from other far away places. I really hope Darrel finds something good he can use for tomato breeding.

Good to meet you, Velikipop. The history of Yugoslavia has been sad since the breakup, hasn't it?

Jennifer, like the new pic!

Nice to meet you as well Scott. Dice I agree with you entirely and suspect that the same as you outlined would appply to the varieties from the Balkan region.

I tried getting seeds from family there (in-laws), but always ended up getting various hybrids and/or otherwise available varieties. The two varieties that I did get were not stellar in my environment.

Still, it's great to read about this. I would certainly be interested in trying any new "Yugoslavian" varieties if they were to pan out.

*fingers crossed*

A friend of mine from Croatia had his family send me two huge packets of seed that is supposedly a friend's family's heirlooms. I questioned him about it carefully, and he said that they were not hybrids, but were family heirlooms that they have been growing for years. The problem is, the seed packages that the seed was sent in were old hybrid packages. I havent grown them out.

I have some fresh and some old CV varieties from Serbia. If anyone wants a few seeds to try send me your address by PM. Lots of Jasenecki Jabucar, Novosadski Jabucar and Volovsko Srce (Oxheart), similar to Kososvo but not quite.

My mom recently brought me back seeds from Pazova, Serbia. My wife is headed to Croatia next month so I tasked her with bringing me back a bunch of varieties from there...I'm growing the ones from Pazova now so I'll see how the turn out...I love tomatoes from Jugoslavia!

many years ago i ran a greenouse selling bedding plants and of course specializing in tomato plants it was before the trends of op varieties but i lived in an area where there at the time a lare population of hungarian and yougoslavian people and the hungaririan would bring me thheyre praprika pepper seeds to grow which were amazian but i had this one older yougoslavian customer that brougt me tomato seed from her country it was wonderful a long sausage type tomato.. she would tell me stories of how she grew tomatoes there and would go to the bakery every day for the stale bread and bury it buy the tomato plants and the stems would become as thick as tree trunks.... now i only wish i had saved the seed back then lol
