To southern Italians, the only legit San Marzano tomatoes have specific genetics AND they are grown on the shoulders of Mt Vesuvius (San Marzano has a "DOP" designation, linking it to a place as well as a variety -- like French wines).

I had heard of San Marzano way before I took up gardening. The Striped Marzano sounds good. Speckled Roman is a cross between Antique Roman and Banana Legs. Antique Roman tastes very good but is really late. Banana Legs grew Semi-Det for us and started producing early and a lot. I could see the Striped Marzano as a good tasting heavy producing tomato.

Brandywine = countless varieties.
